Drucker Thursday: The Social Sector
“Who takes care of the social challenges of the knowledge society?”
Drucker was a big proponent of the social sector and spent a lot of time consulting, advising and writing about the social sector. The work of the Girls Scouts of America was one of his favourite stories.
In Drucker’s clear cut language, he saw a range of social challenges coming up and how the social sector adds value.
The real answer to the question “Who takes care of the social challenges of the knowledge society?” is neither “the government” nor “the employing organization.” It is a separate and new social sector. Government has proved incompetent at solving social problems. The nonprofits spend far less for results than governments spend for failures.
Drucker inspired me to spread my wings across the private sector, the public sector and the social sector. Child protection, disability, malnutrition, health, aged care, indigenous challenges & rural India.
Massive opportunities exist to bring the Theory of the Business to NFPs and Co-Ops and social enterprises.
“It is not business, it is not government, it is the social sector that may yet save society”. - Drucker
