In a recent exploration of Alfred Chandler’s strategy and structure framework, we examined how tech companies like Dell are adapting their organisational structures to support AI-driven strategies. While alignment between strategy and structure is essential, it’s only part of the equation in today’s fast-paced AI age. Success also depends on rhythm—the tempo at which organisations move, adapt, and respond. Enter the Lines, Loops, and Vibes (LLV) framework, a tool to understand and shape strategic rhythms, building on Chandler’s foundation.
For a reminder, here is more LLV and image below.
The book The Helix Moment where we delve deeper into Lines Loops Vibes and Human-AI collaboration is now at the last stage of getting ready to publish.
Why Rhythm Matters
Chandler showed us that structure must follow strategy, but AI’s rapid evolution adds a new layer: timing. Executives often lament, “Our 5-year plan became a 3-year plan, then a 6-month plan—now it’s not even a plan.” This reflects a shift in organisational rhythm, driven by AI’s demand for speed, experimentation, and responsiveness.
The LLV & Structure
LLV breaks down rhythm into three components:
Lines = Intent: The long-term strategic direction—your vision and big bets that hold steady over time.
Loops = Practice: The cycles you run—planning, feedback, and iteration—that keep you moving.
Vibes = Feel: The energy and signals from your team, customers, and market context.
Together, these elements reveal the rhythm your organisation operates in and highlight where adjustments are needed.
LLV in Action
AI accelerates and reshapes rhythms:
Shorter, Smarter Loops: Rapid experimentation and evaluation cycles let companies test AI solutions quickly.
Adaptive Lines: Long-term vision remains, but it’s revisited more often to stay relevant.
Responsive Vibes: Teams must tune into cultural shifts and customer feedback faster than ever.
For example, a company like Google balances its long-term AI vision (Lines) with iterative algorithm updates (Loops) and a culture of innovation (Vibes). Misalign these, and you risk stalling—like a legacy firm stuck in slow Loops despite an ambitious Line.
A Simple Diagnostic
To assess your rhythm, ask:
1. Lines: What’s our long-term direction? Are we clear on our transformation themes?
2. Loops: Where are we cycling—experiments, quarterly plans, daily standups?
3. Vibes: What’s the energy like? Are we picking up signals from the market and team?
If these are out of sync—one dragging or racing ahead—your rhythm’s off. The fix lies in realigning them.
From Insight to Impact
LLV isn’t just analysis; it’s a lever for action. In strategy sessions, I’ve seen it help leaders balance bold, long-term moves with quick, adaptive cycles. It turns friction into focus, letting organisations design strategies that breathe and evolve.
Structure + Rhythm = Success
Chandler’s work teaches us alignment; LLV adds tempo. In the AI age, you need both: a structure that supports your strategy and a rhythm that keeps you in step with change.
